Looking for great veg food – in Baltimore?

Look no further! Shortly after Compassion Over Killing (COK) launched the online dining, VegBaltimore.com last fall, there was a flood of requests for a printed version—something people could conveniently keep in their cars, or backpack, or purse to help them find animal-friendly fare on the go.

So COK teamed up with the Humane League of Baltimore to create the brand new Vegetarian Guide to Baltimore and Surrounding Areas! This 16-page, full color booklet, loaded with more than 100 places to find veg-friendly fare in and around Maryland’s largest city is absolutely free – just visit VegBaltmore.com to request your copy today.

Award-winning vegan cookbook author Sarah Kramer is currently touring the U.S. to launch her newly released Vegan A Go-Go!: A Cookbook and Survival Manual for Vegans on the Road—and in case you haven’t heard, she’s making a stop in the nation’s capital on Monday, Nov. 3 for a book bash and benefit for Compassion Over Killing!

The event is being hosted at the Science Club, a restaurant and bar in downtown D.C.–and after working with Compassion Over Killing for the last few weeks, they’ll be unveiling several new vegan menu options on Monday night!

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Half the proceeds will be automatically donated to COK, and you’ll also get a complimentary copy of Vegan a Go-Go plus all-you-can-eat vegan appetizers and sweets. Now that’s a reason to vegan a go-go!

Wash. Post: “They Got the Vegetarian Vote”

Today’s Food Section of the Washington Post reported on Compassion Over Killing’s 2008 “Best Vegetarian Food” contest, hosted on VegDC.com. Check it out:

They Got the Vegetarian Vote

The organic eco-cafe Java Green was voted best vegetarian restaurant for the second consecutive year in VegDC.com’s second annual Three Green Stars awards, honoring vegetarian foods made and served in the Washington area. The downtown eatery also won top marks for serving the best vegan burger.

Amsterdam Falafel Shop in Adams Morgan earned a pair of titles as well, for best falafel and best cheap vegan eats.

The VegDC.com Web site was launched in 2000 by Compassion Over Killing, a nonprofit animal advocacy group based in Washington. The group produces an annual vegetarian guide for the metro area.

More than 1,000 people voted in this year’s contest. See the complete list of winners in 14 categories at http://www.vegdc.com.

What are you doing for World GO VEGAN days?

Sat. Oct. 25 to Fri. Oct. 31:World GO VEGAN Days” is an annual celebration highlighting the many benefits of choosing meat-, egg-, and dairy-free foods.

From our first bite of breakfast to our last forkful of food at night, every single day our dietary choices have far-reaching effects on our health, the planet, and the lives and deaths of billions of animals. By learning more about exactly what—and who—we’re eating, we can empower ourselves to take a stand every time we sit down to eat, simply by opting for the vegan version of our favorite foods.

Thankfully, the D.C.-Metro area is home to hundreds of veg-friendly eateries, making it easier than ever to adopt a healthier and more compassionate diet. Check out VegDC.com to discover the very best in vegan dining, including a list of winners in the recent “Best Vegetarian Food” contest of 2008!

But aside from feasting on a Veg Max Panini at Java Green or indulging in decadent desserts at Sticky Fingers Bakery – what are YOU doing for World GO VEGAN days?

Nothing planned? Here are some ideas:

  • Office Feed-In! Make some vegan cupcakes, cookies, or other treats to share with your co-workers. You can even bring in the cookbook to share recipes.
  • Dinner Party! Host a vegan dinner party for your soon-to-be-vegan friends, neighbors, and family. Make it a potluck to encourage others to explore vegan cooking.
